The Sosei Judo club was created in September 2009, shortly after the passing of Sensei Todd Hodder. A small group of his past students and friends took it upon themselves to start training again. With the supervision of Head Instructor Chris Wellon and the sponsorship of Sensei Blair Bradbury (Sandan- 3rd degree black belt of the Astra Judo Club in St.John’s and also Todd’s Sensei), it was decided that they should establish themselves as an active club with Judo Newfoundland and make membership available for others who wish to learn the art of Judo.
Sosei (pronounced so-say) translated from Japanese means Rebirth or Resurrection. The Sosei logo contains the image of a Phoenix which again represents a “rising from the ashes” or born again spirit. We feel the name and logo both symbolize a new beginning for Judo in Gander and, as well, pay subtle homage to Todd and his incredible spirit.
The Sosei Judo Club would also like to acknowledge past Sensei, most recently Sensei Joe Coffey. It is the club’s desire to maintain their previous high standards and dedication to Judo.
